What is Unix Epoch Time?

Unix time (also known as Epoch time or POSIX time) is a standard system for tracking points in time. It measures the total number of seconds elapsed since January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC, without counting leap seconds. Because it is a single integer number, it provides a universal, timezone-independent timestamp format widely used across databases, REST APIs, logging pipelines, and operating systems.

The Year 2038 Problem (Y2038 Bug)

On 32-bit computing systems, Unix time is stored as a signed 32-bit integer, which has a maximum value of 2,147,483,647 seconds. On January 19, 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC, 32-bit clocks will overflow into negative numbers and wrap around to December 13, 1901. Modern 64-bit architectures avoid this issue, extending the timestamp validity to over 292 billion years.

Frequently asked questions

Does this tool automatically detect seconds versus milliseconds?

Yes. If your input timestamp has 10 digits or fewer, it is parsed as Unix seconds. If it contains 13 digits, it is automatically parsed as milliseconds.

Why is my converted local time different from UTC?

Unix timestamps always represent the exact same absolute universal moment. UTC is the zero-offset reference, while Local Time adjusts for your device's geographical timezone and Daylight Saving Time (DST).

Is my data sent to any server?

No. All conversions happen entirely in your browser using local JavaScript engines.
