URL Encoder & Decoder – Percent-Encoding RFC 3986 Tool
Why URL Encoding (Percent-Encoding) Matters
URLs can only contain a specific subset of ASCII characters (RFC 3986). Unsafe characters such as spaces, ampersands (&), question marks (?), slashes (/), and non-Latin UTF-8 characters must be escaped into hexadecimal percent notation (e.g. spaces become %20) so web browsers and API servers can parse query strings accurately.
Difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent
- encodeURIComponent: Encodes all special characters including
/,?,&, and=. Use this when encoding individual query parameter values. - encodeURI: Preserves protocol delimiters like
http://and path slashes, encoding only spaces and unsafe characters in full web addresses.
Frequently asked questions
Is my data kept private?
Yes. URL encoding runs 100% locally in your web browser. Sensitive tokens or passwords in URLs are never logged or sent to any server.
Can this handle Unicode and non-English characters?
Yes. All UTF-8 international characters (Chinese, Japanese, Arabic, Cyrillic, emojis) are converted into standard RFC 3986 percent notation.
